Formed in 1992, and still going strong today
Scott Rees & Co was founded in 1992 by Peter Scott and Daniel Rees. Peter has since retired, but Daniel remains our Senior Partner. Our Managing Partner, Royston Smith, joined the firm in August 1992 and has been here through most of these changes, too.
Our offices were in Skelmersdale from 1992 to 2017. In 2004, on a Friday, a fire in an adjacent building destroyed half of our Skelmersdale office space. Although it was a sad and terrifying moment, our team worked above and beyond anyone’s expectations and we opened as normal on the Monday, despite the challenging conditions. We had two episodes of extensive flooding at this site too, that did not prevent our service from being delivered.
Many firms talk about their business continuity plans and disaster recovery processes. We have actually tested ours in the crucible of real experiences. Our clients can be confident we can overcome hurdles that would close down other firms – real world peace of mind for clients, gained through our hard-earned experience.
Our partners took the initiative to invest heavily in a computer system and digital technology, to make our service even more robust. We partnered with leading suppliers of IT services to take over running the server network, alongside which we rolled out a state-of-the-art case management and document management system.
Technology is a big part of all modern business, but we would not have a firm if it wasn’t for our people. So, we worked hard to create a great place to work. We wanted to retain the staff who provide the service to our clients and, after 25 years of providing legal services from Skelmersdale, we decided to move to purpose-built offices in Newton Le Willows. We moved to our new offices at The Parks in Newton-le-Willows in 2017.
Again, our systems and people provided a seamless service during this mass transition, testimony again to the robustness we have developed at every level of the business.
Our team and business have come a long way and always have come out stronger. When the COVID-19 pandemic struck, to our shared vision of investing in the best technology, our team was able to immediately switch to remote working – a week ahead of Government guidelines.
Many of our legal services can now be completed virtually; clients are not required to visit us and the whole legal process can be completed by letter, email and/or phone.
Awards & Accreditations
Over the years, Scott Rees & Co has earned several awards. We are SRA accredited and in 2011, we were awarded the Investors in People standard and badge. In the legal sector, we were only one of five firms awarded this particular standard in England and Wales.
We are very proud of our Investors In People award, which has evolved and developed our business with it. We have kept the IIP accreditation, and have since retained it in 2014, and again in 2017. We still hold it today. We firmly believe that our staff are our foundation and the reason for our success. Investing in their growth and development is in our DNA and we are committed to them as much as they are to us.
We also hold the prestigious legal standard known as “Lexcel”. This is a Law Society benchmark for excellence in practice management, which we have continuously held since 2012.
In 2015 we were named in the Legal 500 for the first time, capping our progress after over 15 years in business. The Legal 500 is a highly prestigious legal directory that is put together using information gathered about the firm’s performance and feedback provided by our clients. We have been part of the Legal 500 every year since.
