Recovering from injury – A community effort

An injured driver recently found assistance in his recovery thanks to his local community and family. The story is an excellent example of how a few helping hands can vastly improve recovery from injury.

Deep scarring

On the May day bank holiday, Steve Harrold of Manchester was finishing his journey, turning into his driveway. As he did another motorist collided with the rear of his car at high speed, causing a substantial crash. The collision resulted in heavy damage to Steve’s face and damage to his car.

A large gash across his head with a mix of broken bones from the impact left him badly injured. It took two surgeons two hours to fix the initial damage, the pain of the operation staying with him for a long time afterwards.

Power in people

Recovering from the injury is likely to be a long and arduous process. Having undergone surgery and being out of work for some time, many everyday tasks are likely to be difficult for Steve. Thankfully for him, he has a very supportive local network, with neighbours and family willing to help. On the day of the incident, local residents rushed to the scene, calling 999 and doing their best to control the situation.

In the aftermath he has seen neighbours assist and take the pressure off while he recovers. He has fully experienced what a great support network can do when it comes to getting over an injury, describing the aftermath:

“What happened to me on Bank Holiday Monday has given me back my faith in humanity.”

“I thought I was going to die, but my neighbours, the emergency services, everyone was just phenomenal, I just want people to know how much I appreciate it. I’m just so humbled.”

“The amount of cars that pulled over, and the amount of people that tried to help me. I have no way of thanking them. I’d like to think that in that scenario, I would help – I certainly would now.”
