Abdominal injury

Abdominal injury can be caused by direct trauma (both internally or externally) to the stomach, intestines, liver, kidneys, etc.

Abdominoplasty

Abdominoplasty is more commonly recognised as tummy tuck surgery. Tummy tuck surgery is used to remove any excess skin to create a slimmer and tighter abdominal area for cosmetic reasons.

ABI

ABI stands for Association of British Insurers. The association works closely with the government and regulators to ensure that the high standards of the insurance industry are met.

Accident

In solicitor terms, an 'accident' is where a person is physically or mentally harmed either intentionally or unplanned by another person, object or environment.

A&E

A&E stands for 'Accident & Emergency'. This refers to the A&E department at most hospitals where medical staff deal with acute diagnosis of minor and major injuries, including high priority cases that are considered life-threatening and serious.

After-the-event insurance

After-the-event insurance can be abbreviated to 'ATE' insurance. This is a policy that provides cover for any legal costs that you may be liable to pay the defendant during a claim (in accordance with your policy's terms) as well as disbursements if your claim is unsuccessful.

Amputation

Amputation is the surgical procedure to permanently remove a limb from the main body. Amputation is used as a last resort and may be considered by medical staff in accidents where serious injury is involved.

Anaesthetic

Anaesthetic is a drug that causes reversible loss of sensation and is often used to facilitate surgery. Negligent use of anaesthetics can cause serious complications for patients during and after surgery.

Ankle injury

Anosmia

Anosmia is the medical term for losing the sense of smell. It is possible to experience anosmia from a brain injury or industrial disease and should be checked with a doctor as soon as possible.

The application to a High Court for a decision made at court to be reversed and/or reconsidered.
