Payout for brave fall gran Winnie

An Exeter grandmother has won a four figure payout after a serious fall outside her home.

Winifred Powlesland, 71, has been awarded £6,500 after breaking her leg in four places when she fell on an uneven road surface outside her sheltered accommodation block in Beacon Heath.

Staff at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital told Winifred her injuries were so severe that she risked losing her leg or even her life if she did not have urgent surgery following the accident in May 2005.

Strong-minded Winnie initially refused the operation as she was terrified of going under the knife – but after a heartfelt newspaper appeal by her family she relented and has since recovered well following the successful surgery.

Lawyer James Driscoll, of national personal injury specialists Scott Rees & Co Solicitors, of Skelmersdale, Lancashire, who represented Winnie, said: “Mrs Powlesland was a very active lady before the accident and the fall drastically affected her quality of life.

“She could not enjoy her hobbies such as cooking and travelling and, more importantly, she faced the possibility of losing her leg.

“She was understandably frightened about surgery but the operation was a great success and she can now enjoy her hobbies and family life once more.

“Exeter City Council admitted liability right away so we were able to proceed to get Mrs Powlesland the compensation she deserved.”
