NEW APIL PRESIDENT'S PLEA FOR COMPASSION

THE new President of the Association of Personal Injury Lawyers has called on the claims and insurance sectors to remember claimants are people, not statistics.

In an article about his new tenancy, David Bott told Post Magazine and Insurance Week that the insurance and claims industry should not forget that they were dealing with individuals who had suffered injuries.

He also agreed that the industry had to adapt to change and said his year in office had come at a time of significant shift in working practises and attitudes as well as Government reform.

Mr Bott is one of the youngest appointed Presidents of APIL which, as an organisation is more than 20 years ago.

The new President criticised changes due to be implemented as a result of the Jackson Report and said it was likely to have a negative effect on claimants with serious injuries; he expressed concern that shortfalls would have to be footed by the taxpayer.

Mr Bott however agreed that the new claims portal – an electronic process to handle low value road traffic accident personal injury claims – had been successful in speeding up the claims process.

He also welcomed Government plans to create an Employers’ Liability Insurance Bureau to provide employees who have suffered industry-related conditions, such as asbestos induced mesothelioma, with compensation where the employer could not be traced.
